My name is Amanda Jones although most know me as Mandie. I am a certified birth doula (certified as of January 2017; working since March 2014) with a passion for helping expectant families achieve their birth goals. I have attended a variety of hospital births as well as a few birth center births and have seen the value in supporting laboring women no matter the setting. How awesome to be invited into the most precious part of someone’s life to support them through it?!
On a personal note, I have two children both born by "belly birth". My 5-year-old was born 9 weeks early which was quite the introduction to parenting! She has not stopped teaching us about how wonderfully messy life is. My 2-year-old was also medically fragile and needed heart surgery at just 3 months of age. You could say we have been through the ringer but all this is even more reason for me to want to support other families through this special time of life. I have been married to my high school sweetheart for 10 years and we live in Aurora Colorado. We love spending time together as a family and enjoy being involved in our church community and in our neighborhood.
Babies and childcare feels like it has been a part of who I am ever since I can remember. I was very much a girly girl with my favorite game to play being house where I got to be the mom, and I had a whole tub of baby dolls. All I have ever wanted to be is a mom. Babies and childcare feels like it has been a part of who I am ever since I can remember. I was very much a girly girl with my favorite game to play being house where I got to be the mom, and I had a whole tub of baby dolls. All I have ever wanted to be is a mom.
My first interest in birth work started from watching the TLC channel’s show “A baby story” and “Bringing Home Baby.” They displayed all different kinds of birth from natural birth at home with a midwife to high risk pregnancy ending in an emergency C-Section. My favorite was watching the midwives with the moms, seeing the care and comfort that went into those births drew me in. Naturally I am a very empathetic person, and I often would cry and feel every emotion broadcasted. The beauty of every single birth no matter the situation, left me in awe, and I decided being a midwife is what I wanted to be when I grew up.
As hard as I tried to go the nursing route working my way into being a midwife, school was just not for me. Then life hit with the birth of my daughter. Shortly after the idea of being a doula was first introduced to me. I had no interest because I did not understand the role a doula played. The more I looked into it, and realized that the passion I have for the care and comfort of a mom in labor matched up exactly with the role of a doula and so much more. Before I knew it I had taken the introductory class and was on course for my certification as a doula.
It was a huge blessing to partner up with Mandie who definitely helped me along with my certification and getting connected into the doula community. As of now, life is still insane, but I could not be more excited and motivated to pursue my certification as soon as I can. The knowledge and experienced over these last couple years has only made me that more ready, passionate, and excited to share and thrive in this rewarding path of life.
Nana's Birth Services
You always hear cute stories of how couples meet, and how those stories feel so special and unique each and every one. In a way that’s how our story feels. Mandie, 7 years ago was a youth leader for high schoolers where in my junior year I had the privilege of being mentored by this amazing woman who was soon pregnant with her first child. Mandie after her own experience in childbirth, found a love and passion for becoming a doula. She and I already had such a special bond over the years, that when I began pursuing my certification as well, it just seemed so natural and such an easy decision to make in going into business together. The name “Nana” came out of childhood nicknames we were both given by endearing family members, and Nana’s Birth Services was born.
Mandie and I may be a few years apart and look completely different, but our desires and passion for what we do lines up, causing our bond to grow stronger. We have both been told how we share the same temperament and attitude in our work. This is the reason I love our story so much, because of the unique journey life has taken us to get to this point. I don’t think very many people get to say that they got to go into business with a person they admire and look up to. We are only just getting started, but the fire is burning bright, and I don’t see that flame weaning anytime soon.
Welcome to Nana’s Birth Services!
